Alhaurin de la Torre

Alhaurin de la Torre, is a place which, due to its strategical location, was an exceptionally good place for the development of a flourishing and rich town, proud of its ancestral roots, from before the Roman times until today.

Named by libyan-phoenicians as Lauro, it was called Lauro Vetus under the Roman Empire. From Moslem times, it was named Albarracin and later Laulin. With the conquest by Catholic Monarchs for Castille in 1487, and after a period without important events, it began to develop until it became the town we all know today.

The most relevant archeological sites are situaded in "Estacion de la Alqueria", recently declared a site Historical-Artistical interest with an area of 18 hectares and an occupation which dated form the third century B.C. to the fourth century A.D. The archaeological inheritance is abundant: remains of mosaics, walls, pottery, coins, Roman burial sites ...

Typical streetFrom the Moslem time, it only remains a ruin tower in Torre Alquería and the typical Barrio Viejo in the village. This Barrio reflects the Arabic culture, with blind alleys and narrow streets, with its whitewashed façades and colourfully adorned with geraniums protecting the balconies wiht ancients bars.

At the request of the Queen Isabel, the San Sebastian Parish was founded in 1505, although was built in 1610 and destroyed in the 1680. The actual church was rebuilt during the XIX century.

Inside you can see the beautiful images of the Easter-Holy Week brotherhoods, and others like St. Sebastian, St. John and the Virgin of La Candelaria.

Other interesting places in the town are the Alamillo Hermitage, the Santo Cristo del Cardon Hermitage, the Municipal Park and El Porton country house.
You can see also the remains of the ancient aqueduct named "Fuente del Rey" in Zapata quarter, from the XVIII century, and the shelter of General Torrijos, a liberal hero in the XIX century, in Torre Alqueria. Arcos de Zapata
